Your Reading Keep It Clean
A key point of the Your Reading campaign is to make our town cleaner - that means tackling litter, graffiti and abandoned vehicles. The council has stepped up street cleaning and is ploughing more money into it's Street Care services. And we are calling on local people to think more carefully about how they get rid of their rubbish.
Litter, especially cigarette stubs, chewing gum and fast food containers spoil the look of our town and cost Council Tax payers thousands of pounds to clear up.
The Your Reading Keep It Clean campaign involves local schools, youth and community groups and businesses.
Litter
The message to everyone living, working or visiting Reading is that litter will not be tolerated. As part of the campaign, the Council is looking at the best way of using its enforcement powers to fine or prosecute litter louts, people who abandon vehicles, people who write grafitti, fly-tippers and drug users.
We take a tough stance on people who dump rubbish at hot spots like recycling sites and outside fast food outlets.
Needles & Syringes
A 24-hour clean-up team of council workers has been trained to safely dispose of the needles that drug addicts leave lying in the streets. If you see a discarded needle please report it straight away by phoning 0800 626540 (Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm). Outside of these hours please phone 0118 9373737.
Bulky Waste
A campaign is also running to encourage more people to use the Council's Bulky Waste Collection Service. The team will take away large items of household rubbish for a small charge.
