Reading's Tree Strategy
Trees are one of Reading's most visible and important natural assets. Reading Borough Council has now drafted Tree Strategy to give new guidance in relation to the protection and management of trees and the planting of new ones.
The draft strategy spells out the significance of trees to the unique character of many parts of Reading's environment, to quality of life and their vital role in mitigating the future impacts of climate change.
Many of Reading's trees date from Victorian and Edwardian times and are now reaching old age. The Council has already begun a condition survey of all council-owned trees and the Tree Strategy sets out policies and priorities for replacement trees when necessary.
While the Council obviously owns many trees, the Tree Strategy applies to all stakeholders and is intended to raise the profile of Reading's trees and the responsibility of a variety of stakeholders within the community for the planting and ongoing maintenance of trees.
As well as detailing the need for an even spread of trees across Reading, the strategy also highlights the various constraints that can occur with the planting of street trees.
The draft Strategy can be downloaded below. Widespread consultation on the document will take place in February and March.
