Adoption

You can adopt if you:

  • are over 21
  • have lived in the UK for at least a year

If you are in reasonably good health, there is no upper age limit - we also always consider people with disabilities. If you smoke, you cannot adopt a child under five. We consider applicants from outside Reading, up to an hour's drive away.

Apply

If you are interested, complete our adoption enquiry form. We will send out an information pack that explains the process.

Reading's children

We do not often have babies that need adopting. We particularly need adopters for:

  • two or more siblings
  • black and minority ethnic children
  • children aged four and over
  • children with learning and physical disabilities
  • children from troubled backgrounds

Your lifestyle

If you adopt, you will need to provide a stable environment for your children. This means you might have to adjust the amount you work. Gov.uk has information on adoption pay and leave.

Post-adoption support

We work with the Berkshire Adoption Advisory Service - we can support you after you have adopted or given a child up for adoption. In some cases we may provide financial support.

Adopting a stepchild or relative

Gov.uk has information on the rules of stepchild adoption.

You can also fill in the adoption enquiry form if you are over 21 and want to adopt a relative of at least 19 weeks. We will assess the situation.
