The Reading branch of Berkshire Family History Society start our 2018 monthly meetings, on Thursday 25th January, when Chris and Judy Rouse return to give a talk entitled Ticket to Ride: the perils and pleasures of early Victorian rail travel. Chris and Judy run "Wyvern" Railway Ancestry Research Advice, and maintain a large index of railway staff and navvy names have prepared a talk about the working life of the Railway navvy in the 19th Century. Their interest in these men had come about from requests at FHS fairs for information on tracing a navvy ancestor. Initially they had thought the short answer was "There aren't any" but when they started looking into the question of navvies in detail they came to realise that there were in fact many contemporary and modern sources that could be used, if not to construct a complete record for an individual navvy, at least to build a detailed picture of their lives and working conditions.
We take railway travel for granted today, but for our Victorian forbears the railways opened up undreamed of opportunities for not only the middle classes but also the ordinary working man and his family to travel not only to work but also pleasure, creating a much more mobile society. However the new mode of transport also brought with it many dangers and perils. Using contemporary newspapers and illustrations we show you how the Victorians took advantage of the new railway system.

We meet at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, 280 Meadway, Tilehurst RG30 4PE. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start. All are welcome - free entry, but donations gratefully received. We hope to see you there.
