Abbey Ruins

Abbey Street, Reading, RG1 3BA

Historical interest

The remains of the magnificent Reading Abbey are a popular attraction. Situated in the heart of Reading, the Abbey Ruins are a wonderfully historic location set on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The Holy Brook, which provided freshwater and power for the great Abbey Mill, joins the canal at this point. Much of the waterside here is accessible. Unfortunately, the Abbey Ruins site has been closed to the public since 2009 due to the deteriorating condition of the flint walls. In December 2015 the Council secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant which will be matched by a contribution from the Council to conserve and interpret the Abbey Ruins; it is proposed that the site will be open again to the public in Summer 2018.
