Battle Library is going to be bigger, brighter and better thanks to a £1.4million grant from the BIG Lottery.

Battle Library was constructed in 1907 and is an important landmark building in Oxford Road, West Reading. The library is used by hundreds of residents every week and all are set to benefit from the transformation.
Just some of improvements in store on top of a completely refurbished interior, are a new outdoor reading patio space at the back, opened up staff areas for library use, new toilets (child & disabled friendly) and even a sedum roof.

Children will benefit from a new messy play area, a modernised children’s library and a story telling wall.

Reading Borough Council submitted detailed plans to BIG 11 April 2008 and on 21 July 2008 received news that they are happy with our plans and designs for the renovation and have agreed to grant us the funding – which is fantastic news!

We have recently received planning approval and appointed Mansells Construction Ltd as the main contractor.

We will now look to close the library on Saturday 18 October 2008 to carry out the improvements, re-opening in the Summer 2009.

Please read “Battle Library - frequently asked questions” below for further details of what happens whilst the library is closed.

A Battle Library Project Board was established to oversee the renovation project and has been meeting regularly, consulting with residents and library users.

The project board consists of representatives from the community, local councillors and Reading Borough Council officers.
