Become a childminder

To work as a childminder, you must register with OfSTED (Office for Standards in Education).

Before you can register, you will need to complete all of the following:

  1. Childminder briefing session
  2. Two day introductory course
  3. 'Universal' Safeguarding children training - Safeguarding Children Training
  4. An approved paediatric first aid training course.

We offer regular briefing sessions (free to Reading residents and £20 to others):

  • Thursday 25 May, 1 to 3pm at the Avenue Centre
  • Wednesday 5 July, 6.30 to 8.30pm at the Avenue Centre

OfSTED has information about the process of becoming a childminder and a registration form.

Childminder introductory training

This two day course prepares learners in setting up and establishing a childminding business. Content includes an introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), aspects of early years care and education as well as the business aspects of a childminding service. It is run by qualified tutors experienced in childminding and early years practice.

Cost: £150 for Reading residents, £200 for others.
