Safer Nights Out in Reading

Planning your Night Out

  • Know your limit.  Set a limit before you start drinking and when you reach it - Stop!  Avoid one more for the road
  • Eating some food before you start drinking will help line your stomach
  • Keep your friends and family up to date with where you are
  • Pace your drinking - it'll help keep you on the ball!

On Your Night Out

  • Don't mix your drinks or drink too much
  • Drugs are illegal.  Don't mix drugs and alcohol
  • Keen the night a happy one and walk away from fights or trouble
  • Watch out for suspicious looking people; don't draw your attention to your money or mobile phone
  • Never accept a drink from someone you don't know and never leave your drink unattended
  • If you feel dizzy or sick, ask someone you trust to take you to safety.  If you are alone or can't find your friends/colleagues, tell the bar staff
  • Remember - tap water is free in most pubs and bars
  • Keep an eye on your friends.  If someone collapses and is unconscious - call an ambulance, don't leave them alone.

Planning Your Journey

  • Never drink and drive
  • Designate a driver before you go out
  • Pre-book a licensed taxi or know where the taxi ranks are.  Keep some money left over for the fee
  • Get the Night Bus home
  • Don't walk home alone
  • Keep the noise down in residential areas
  • Play it safe - carry a personal attack alarm with you and always walk in a well-lit area
  • Go before you leave - urinating in the streets isn't pretty!
  • Make sure you and your friends get home safely
