Our Mayor

Councillor Gul Khan
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading
Councillor Gul Khan was born in 1942 and grew up in a small town called Kala Gujran, in Pakistan. He travelled with my parents to Kuwait in 1959 and years later came to the UK. He initially lived in Nelson, Lancashire and worked for a cotton mill based in Nelson. He moved to Reading in 1966 and became involved in the local community.
He was actively involved in the establishment of the very first mosque in East Reading and took a keen interest in promoting race relations within the community. He also worked with the local MPs to promote the introduction of Halal food in hospitals and schools and was one of the founding members of the Pakistani Community Centre
His involvement in local politics spans many decades, but most recently, he joined Reading Borough Council as the councillor for Katesgrove Ward in 2004 and was re-elected as a councillor for Battle Ward in 2008. He has served on many committees and panels, such as the Pensioners Working Group, the Council’s Education and Environment Scrutiny Panels and the Access Forum to name just a few.
Councillor Khan has chosen ‘care in the community’ as his theme for the year and has pledged his support to the Duchess of Kent House Charity which provides specialist palliative care services to adult patients with cancer and other life-shortening diseases and Age UK (formerly known as Age Concern and Help the Aged).
