Councillor Fred Pugh
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading
Councillor Fred Pugh was born in London and grew up in Kingston on Thames. Married to Jean, they have two daughters, both married, and two grandchildren. They moved to Caversham from Kingston in 1969 and have lived in the same house ever since.
Fred was educated at Surbiton Grammar School and Birmingham University and spent his whole working life in railway management. He took early retirement in 1993 and has since devoted himself full time to his council duties. First elected as a Conservative councillor for Caversham ward in 1976, he later represented Thames ward and has been the councillor for Mapledurham ward since it was formed in 2004. He has served on most council committees and panels, and chaired the Transport Committee for a short time. He has also chaired the former Waterways Committee and the Hexagon Management Board. He is currently chairman of the Mapledurham Playing Fields Management Committee.
Fred was Leader of the Conservative Group (latterly the main opposition party) for 10 years. He has represented the Council on several outside bodies, and is currently a Council representative on the Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Authority and the River Thames Alliance. He has been a governor of four schools, chairman at three of them, including Kendrick Girls School, where he was Chairman for many years.
Outside politics, Fred’s interests are foreign travel, photographing steam trains and listening to classical music.
