Electoral Registration

You have to complete an electoral registration form to register as an elector. This will allow you to vote in Local and Parliamentary elections and referenda, if you qualify.

Paying Council Tax will not add you to the register automatically and if you have moved home you will need to fill in a new registration form, below.

Who can register to vote?

To register you must be:

• A British citizen
• Or a citizen of the Irish Republic
• Or a citizen of other European Union Countries - European Union citizens will be registered as local government electors only, except citizens of Cyprus, Malta or the Irish Republic, who can vote in all elections
• Or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen - this means a Commonwealth citizen who has right of abode - i.e. does not require leave to enter or remain in the UK - or has leave to enter/remain
• Over 16 - although you must be 18 to vote
• Living at the address where you wish to register

How do I register to vote?

After the Annual Canvass, from mid-November until mid-August each year, you need to register by completing a rolling registration form, according to the Statutory timetable below. Individual signatures are required so Annual Canvass forms cannot be used between these dates.

We can send you a form, or you can obtain an application form from the link above under 'Related Information', or visit the Electoral Commission Website, see the relevant link at the bottom of this page.  A letter of confirmation is sent when an elector is added to the Register by means of rolling registration.
