Councillor Deborah Edwards
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading
Cllr Deborah Edwards who was named as Reading’s new Mayor at the council’s AGM.
She takes over from Gul Khan, who has been confirmed as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.
Cllr Edwards has been a Southcote Councillor for five years and has lived in Reading for more than 30 years. She is a school governor for Manor Primary and outhcote Primary Schools, has five children and six grandchildren.
She has chosen six charities she will be supporting during her term of office involving families, children and vulnerable people. They are Plan UK International, NSPCC, Berkshire Women’s Aid, Albert Road Day Centre, Launchpad and the YMCA. She will also be supporting other local charities as and when they need a boost.
Cllr Edwards said she was ‘extremely honoured’ to become Reading’s First Citizen.
“I have lived here for 30 years and because of the fabulous way the whole community embraces newcomers I feel I have become a Reading native through and through,” she said.
And she pledged to serve local people and work to enhance Reading’s standing across the whole of the UK.
