How we make decisions

Councillors

Councillors are elected every four years and make decisions at council or committee meetings. You can use our lead councillors and committee chairs page to see who sits on each committee.

Full council

All elected Councillors, from all the parties, meet six times a year to set the council's policy and budget framework.  You are welcome to attend meetings of Council - you can ask up to three questions. You have to submit your questions at least four clear working days before the meeting (if the meeting is on a Tuesday the question deadline will be 6pm the Tuesday before assuming no bank holidays). You also have to follow the same timescale if you want to submit a petition.  Please be aware that there is a time limit at meetings of Council for asking questions and presenting petitions of 30 minutes.

Committees

This is where councillors make day-to-day decisions and review policies. Committees are made up of councillors from all parties, based on their proportional representation on the council. You are welcome to attend committee meetings - you can ask up to three questions. You have to submit your questions at least four clear working days before the meeting (if the meeting is on a Tuesday the question deadline will be 6pm the Tuesday before, assuming no bank holidays). You also have to follow the same timescale if you want to submit a petition. Please be aware that there is a time limit at Committee meetings for asking questions and presenting petitions of 30 minutes.
