Sustainable Schools
The Government would like every school to be a sustainable school by 2020.
A sustainable school prepares young people for a lifetime of sustainable living, through its teaching, its fabric and its day-to-day practices. It is guided by a commitment to care:
- for oneself;
- for each other (across cultures, distances and generations); and
- for the environment itself (far and near).
DCSF has produced The Sustainable Schools Framework. It gives schools a useful umbrella under which a range of critical initiatives and policies can be pursued in an integrated way. Existing work could be in areas such as: ECO Schools, Healthy Schools, School Meals, Extended schools, School Travel plans, international links, waste management, use of school grounds and buildings, active schools councils, parent/community involvement, learning outside the classroom.
All schools in Reading are already working on activities recognised within the Sustainable Schools Framework.
The message is that Sustainable Schools is NOT a new agenda for schools!
In this area you will find information about:
- leading your school’s work on the Framework;
- the s3 self-evaluation;
- where to go/who to ask for further information.
The options on the left are the eight doorways of the Sustainable Schools Framework and give some starting points for considering your school’s work in each area, how the LA services support each area, useful contacts and other web links.
