Your rights as a Secure Tenant

You are a Secure Tenancy if you signed a Tenacy Agreement and have completed your Introductory Tenancy period.

As a secure Tenant you have the right:

  • to stay living in your home as long as you want 
  • for a member of your family to take over your tenancy on your death
  • to sublet part of your home
  • to take in lodgers
  • to have certain types of repair carried out within statutory time limits
  • to carry out improvements to your home provided you get the necessary permissions
  • to receive compensation for certain types of improvements you made to your home when you move out
  • to exchange your home with another council or housing association tenant (suject to the council's agreement)
  • to buy your home
  • to be consulted about matters relating to your tenancy
  • to see your tenancy file  and other information the Council holds about you
  • to have a say in how your home is managed
  • If you are still an Introductory Tenant you will not have all these rights until you become a Secure Tenant

    You do not have all these rights if you have a Suspended Posession Order and have lost your security or tenure

    You do not have these rights if you are a Licensee living in Temporary Accommodation.
