Your rights as a Secure Tenant

You are a Secure Tenancy if you signed a Tenacy Agreement and have completed your Introductory Tenancy period.

As a secure Tenant you have the right:

to stay living in your home as long as you want

for a member of your family to take over your tenancy on your death

to sublet part of your home

to take in lodgers

to have certain types of repair carried out within statutory time limits

to carry out improvements to your home provided you get the necessary permissions

to receive compensation for certain types of improvements you made to your home when you move out

to exchange your home with another council or housing association tenant (suject to the council's agreement)

to buy your home

to be consulted about matters relating to your tenancy

to see your tenancy file and other information the Council holds about you

to have a say in how your home is managed

If you are still an Introductory Tenant you will not have all these rights until you become a Secure Tenant

You do not have all these rights if you have a Suspended Posession Order and have lost your security or tenure

You do not have these rights if you are a Licensee living in Temporary Accommodation.
