Reading Blooms

FlowersReading in Bloom is part of the National "Britain in Bloom" initiative which, every summer brings out the best in villages, towns and cities throughout the UK! All types of people get involved - and the whole town benefits from the amazing floral displays that pop up all over the place.

In fact with the help of many local people and businesses, and all types of organisations from schools to restaurants, Reading has been the proud winner of the Thames & Chiltern City category for three years (1999 - 2001), and came second in 2005.

In 2007, Reading was named Regional Winner and Best in the Region in the city category of the 2007 Thames and Chilterns in Bloom Competition.

In addition The Forbury Gardens – our Greenflag award winning formal gardens in the heart of the town centre were named Best Park in Region.

Who Can Enter
Anyone who lives in the Borough of Reading can enter the local competition - we are looking for the very best in a wide range of categories. Whether you garden an over-flowing window box, or a 10 acres business park there is a category of Reading in Bloom you can enter. Don't forget you can also nominate a friend or neighbour.

Why not get together with your neighbours and enter as a residential group - perhaps you even have a community garden? If you know someone whose front garden or balcony is a picture every summer, why not encourage them to enter the competition?

Please note: Entry forms for 2009s competition will be available from April 2009.

Judging
All judging is carried out by either a local horticulture expert or members of the Reading Blooms team and is based on criteria including general appearance, attractiveness, imaginative use of displays and (for relevant categories) floral content such as bedding, boxes and tubs.

Due consideration will be given to restrictions on displays given by water shortages (and for creative solutions to ongoing water shortages).

Judging will normally take place in July, subject to weather conditions, and the judges' decision is final.
