New school for East Reading
Reading Borough Council can confirm Crescent Road in East Reading will be the site for the new Maiden Erlegh School.
The Council bought the Crescent Road site last year with the express intention of securing the site for future educational use. This was done in response to the increasing demand on school places both nationally and locally.
At a meeting of Policy Committee on 21st July, Reading Borough Council agreed a long term lease of Crescent Road site to the the new Maiden Erlegh Secondary School, funded by the Education Funding Agency.
The building of a new school at Crescent Road is subject to planning consent, but the Policy Committee decision means preparatory work can now begin for the new school to open to Year 7 students in September 2015.
When open the new Maiden Erlegh School will significantly ease the pressure on secondary school places in East Reading. Without it the Council estimated that Reading’s secondary schools would be completely full by 2017. The proposed new school fulfils Reading Borough Council’s ambition for a new secondary school in East Reading which caters for 11 to 16 year olds.
