Bid for Olympic and Jubilee Grant Cash

Press Release

28/02/2012

Sport and culture organisations across Reading are being invited to bid for grants of up to £10,000 to fund projects linked to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Golden Jubilee.

Reading Borough Council has a total of £42,000 to distribute this year and a further £74,000 next year - money from its Culture and Sports Grants Programme .

Successful bids are likely to be ones which deliver activities, programmes or initiatives for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities across the borough. This could include people with learning or physical disabilities, older people and NEET's (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

The aim is to build on the legacy of the 2012 Games and Jubilee by encouraging more people to take up, and appreciate, the benefits of sport and physical activity or get engaged in cultural initiatives.

Organisations keen to bid for some money will be expected to show how their activities will provide the following:
• A positive experience for participants
• Give participants access to new and challenging activities and develop new skills
• Make sure there are opportunities for participants to continue activities after the project has finished
• Use a variety of venues
• Make sure activities are inspiring for the community
• Make sure the project increases awareness and encourages audience development
• Make sure the project promotes what sport, physical activities and cultural events are available in local communities

Marian Livingston, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local groups, who may be struggling for finance during the current economic climate to apply for vital funding. This may help them improve their facilities, give them scope to welcome new members to their organisation or set up a completely new initiative.

“We’re looking for imaginative initiatives that will open up opportunities to people who previously haven’t had the chance to get involved,” she added.
