Key Skills for Young People
Young people who have a keen interest in photography and media, health and fitness or fashion and beauty are being urged to take advantage of free courses which begin next week, as part of Reading Borough Council’s Positive Futures project.
Positive Futures is a sport and culture programme for young people between the ages of 10-19 years. As well as weekly and holiday activities, Positive Futures also run a number of workshops, awards and qualifications for young people.
Starting from Monday the 20th February - and in partnership with MAPIS academy - Positive Futures are putting on three short courses over the course of 3 weeks in photography & media, health & fitness and fashion & beauty.
The courses are run by experts in their field and are designed to give young people a feel for the industries. They will also work on CV, interview and presentation skills and will provide support at the end of the course to find further training, education, and employment or apprenticeship opportunities if young people wish to take it further.
At the end of the 3 week courses participants will get a chance to plan their own event where they will be able to showcase their work to their friends, family and other professionals.
Marian Livingston, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Culture & Sport, said: “At a time when it is more important than ever to gain worthwhile qualifications, I’m really pleased to see these courses put on for young people. Not only will they give youngsters more of an idea about the professions they are interested in, they will also provide them with the key skills they are going to need to gain employment further along the line.”
