Register a death

You should register a death at the register office of the district it occurred within 5 days, unless a coroner is investigating the circumstances of a death.

If the death happened outside Reading, you must register it at the local register office.

Arranging a funeral quickly

If you have a medical certificate and it is for religious reasons, then the funeral director or a council approved Licensee will normally liaise with the Register Office and Henley Road Cemetery. 

Register office opening hours

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 9am to 4pm

Wednesday: 9.30am to 4.30pm

Weekends: Closed or by appointment only

Tell us once

You can use the online Tell Us Once service to inform most government - and local government - services of a death in one go.

You will be given a reference number by the registrar when you register the death. You will need this number to sign up for the service. If you want to use the service but don't want to sign up online you can call the Department for Work and Pensions on 0800 085 7308 and speak to a Tell Us Once advisor.
