Related Information

Reading Borough Council is the British partner on GEO.POWER which is a European project promoting renewable energy from the ground.

Partners as diverse as Sweden, which has the most heat pumps in Europe, and Bulgaria, which has some high-temperature geothermal springs, are collaborating with Reading and the Italian lead partner to see what we can learn from each other.

There are already a number of ground source heat pumps installed in Reading, including the system that heats the Borough Council’s own Avenue Centre building, which houses the Avenue School and some offices and training suites.

The GEO.POWER project’s aim is to identify ways for increasing the uptake and effectiveness of such ground source energy systems, so that more building owners and users can benefit.

Reading Borough Council joined the two year project in 2010 as the British partner in order to generate, share and receive information useful for achieving the project’s aims in line with Reading’s Climate Change Strategy 2008-13.

Practical Handbook on Ground Source Heat Pumps for Social Housing Providers

  • The steps to take before a ground source heat pump can be installed
  • Operational practicalities of ground source heat pumps
  • Helping building users to adapt to this new form of heating
  • Finance options available for ground source heat pumps
