Controlling Sources of Pollution
In Reading we don’t have any large-scale heavy industry, and the Council focuses on smaller scale potentially polluting activities such as car spraying, timber treatment and petrol station deliveries. Around 62% of Reading is designated as ‘smoke control areas’. In these areas there are strict restrictions on the type of fuel which can be burnt. Smoke control areas were introduced when nearly all households had open fires, although the orders are still in place and can still be enforced. The Clean Air Act 1993 introduced a wide range of new regulations aimed at helping to control smoke emissions, including dealing with dark or black smoke from commercial operations and the height of chimneys.
