Air quality is important for our health, quality of life and the environment. Air pollution is not only harmful to human health but may also have harmful effects on plants and animals as well as corroding materials and buildings. Some pollutants may also contribute to climate change. Air quality across Reading in generally good, long gone are the days of the 1950s when smoke from coal fires and factory chimneys dominated our towns and cities, however today we are faced with different issues regarding air pollution. In Reading we do not have any large scale heavy industry in the borough, the main source of air pollution is from traffic emissions. The following pages give information of how we regularly monitor the air that we breathe and the measures we put in place to reduce the amount of air pollution in the borough.
