Newtown Neighbourhood News

What's New

The Newtown Neighbourhood Plan sets out what is being done in the local area, in response to peoples needs. Under each of the key themes in the plan we are continuing to work with you to improve the area, provide the services needed and support you in bringing about change.

You & Your Community

  • The Children's Centre Hub is now open in Rupert Square. If you have children under 5 and would like to find out what activities are available, please contact a member of the team.
  • Kennet and Brunel Community Association meet regularly to discuss local issues.
  • Hamilton Road Children's Centre is now open at 135 Bulmershe Road where they run a number of activities for under 5's.

Money & Work

  • Would you like support or advice on benefits or legal matters? Have you visited CommuniCare? They run drop in sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and maybe able to help.
  • We are working with New Directions to start more courses in English, Maths, IT and conversation classes.

A Better Place to Live

  • Environment Visual Audits (EVA) are taking place locally, looking for fly tipping, dumped households items, graffiti and reviewing the general state of the local area.
  • The Council is looking at how household waste is stored for properties with no frontage to make the smaller streets a more pleasant place to live. It will also help to reduce fly tipping or the pile up of rubbish bags.
  • A mini "Rescue" event will take place in October with a tidy up focus on Reading's canals and rivers. Newtown Globe are hoping to get a group of residents together to clean up the Kennet towpath.

Making Things Safer

  • The Police, local Councillors and Council Officers are continuing to work at tackling the drug dealing issues in Orts Road and along the Canal.
  • Residents can join their local Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG). For more information please use the website link that will give you more information on the Newtown NAG. The dates of the next NAG meetings are:

Tuesday 27 September at 7.00 pm at the Pakistan Community Centre

Wednesday 26 October at 7.00 pm - the venue has not been confirmed.

Tuesday 22 November at 7.00 pm - the venue has not been confirmed
