Reading Station Upgrade: Town Centre Roadworks

The proposed new Reading Station concourse complements Network Rail's multi-million pound upgrade of rail lines into Reading which will see more trains, more passenger capacity, reduced delays and less overcrowding.

With a much-improved new station building extending across Station Approach and including a large pedestrianised area, Station Approach - currently used by buses, taxis and cycles - will be closed. This means roads around the station need to be reconfigured with bus, taxi, cycle, coach and drop-off interchange facilities in the area re-organised.

This work began on June 21st and has been planned over four phases to try to minimise town centre disruption as far as possible. See the attached map below for the timing and location of the specific phases of work.

Roads affected will include St. Mary's Butts, West Street, Friar Street, Station Road, Station Approach, Blagrave Street, Valpy Street, Forbury Road and The Forbury. Substantial improvements including wider pavements, re-surfaced roads and improved pedestrian crossing facilities will form part of the scheme.

The overall Town Centre project will run through until May 2011.

You may have seen information on the Town Centre scheme at the Public Consultation Events held last Summer and Autumn. To continue with our information campaign, a drop in centre has been provided in the Town Centre at 6 Cross Street where you are able to view plans, look at the works programme, and ask any questions you may have to the works team. Opening hours are 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

This website will be updated regularly as the works progress, but if you require any additional information please contact Cris Butler on 0118 937 2068.

Using the links below, you can download plans showing how the traffic layout in the central area will look once the works are complete, and a programme of the works. You can also download documents showing what the new Reading Station building could look like, proposals for a Northern Public Transport Interchange and how the proposed new concourse fits into the wider rail upgrade scheme.
