Our Youth Service aims to support young people in their transition from childhood to adulthood. It provides a wide and diverse range of facilities, activities and programmes which are designed to provide social and personal learning opportunities for young people aged 11-25 with a priority on engaging 13-19 year olds, based on their needs and interests.

The service complements and supports formal education by offering a curriculum framework which helps young people to explore the issues which affect them, to make responsible choices, to encourage social interaction, and to increase awareness of health and social issues such as drugs and alcohol education.

The service offers this curriculum through a variety of settings - open access youth clubs (see links below to individual clubs), street work, project work, school based work, residentials, group work and through a variety of methods - arts, drama, music, sport and outdoor activities. It also offers opportunities in participating in accredited programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh, Youth Achievement Awards, OCN courses in Music Technology etc. The service will take referrals from other agencies, including schools, and offers targeted programmes for young people who are or who are at risk of offending, not being in education, employment or training, who are pregnant or involved in drugs and alcohol misuse.

Within Reading’s Youth & Community Service there are 24 Youth Workers based in area teams plus 2 Connexions Personal Advisers, providing one to one support for young people aged 13-19 years not in education, employment or training and one specialist Personal Adviser supporting 13-19 year olds with issues relating to substance misuse.
