Street trading consents

Reading Borough Council is now taking expressions of interest in respect of a vacant street trading pitch in Reading town centre.

The pitch would ideally suit traders who are ready to trade with an existing trailer that meets the necessary specifications shown below. However, if you do not own a suitable trailer, and wish to be considered, you are advised not to purchase anything until you are notified that you have been successful.

Interested traders are advised to visit the pitch to ensure it will be suitable for their proposed business regarding location and customer footfall.

Please note, there are no parking spaces available at the site for private vehicles associated with the trading trailer.

The current fee for town centre pitches is £6,129 p.a. (subject to annual increase).
Times of operation to be agreed but must fall within the parameters of 07:00 – 23:00 hours, minimum 6 days per week, throughout the year. No fee is required at this initial stage.

Food traders must be registered as a food business with a Local Authority and have at least a current (within 3 years) level 2 food safety certificate in place.

The consent holder will be required to work at the pitch a minimum of 5 days a week. No sub-letting or transfer of consent is permitted.

Pitch 1 location: Bridge Street, adjacent to the Civic Offices

Scope for a smaller high quality and visually interesting themed mobile trailer unit such as an aluminium airstream, tram carriage, log cabin or similar (Maximum size of 4.0m long x 2.3m wide x 2.3m high). Offering primarily hot or cold food such as jacket potatoes, sandwiches, rolls, cakes, beef burgers, hot dogs, pizzas, crepes, ice cream or other offerings which should complement the attractions and amenities in the area. Limited beverages (by agreement) may be supplied with food only i.e., as part of a meal deal offer. Drinks will not be permitted to be sold without food being purchased. Possibly with a small seating area (that may need to be removed along with the unit from site each day). Please note this pitch is not suitable for late night trading past 23.00 hours. There is a metered 32 amp electric power and water supply available, but no drainage. The applicant will need to make they own arrangements to pay for the electricity and water supply with Reading Borough Council before trading commences.

Make an expression of interest

All expressions of interest must be submitted in writing by email and contain full details of the mobile trading unit, including dimensions and colour photographs (and build time if supplying a brand-new trailer) with a full list and details of your proposed products/merchandise to be sold, and details of your experience in running a business and proposed investment budget. Although we invite expressions of interest from current Reading street traders, preference will be given to new traders, who live within or near the Borough of Reading.

The closing date for expressions of interest will be Friday 7 October 2022 at 12:00hrs (midday). Any expressions of interest received after 12.00hrs (midday) on this date will not be considered. Please note, the Licensing Team may take some time to look at all the proposals received, and ask that you wait to be contacted. If your submission application is incomplete or is received after the deadline, it will be rejected. The decision of the Licensing Team is final.

The successful applicant (subject to a 28-day consultation) will be informed in writing and expected to submit a completed application, within 14 days of the notification date and to commence trading within an agreed time frame. The annual fee is currently £6,129 (subject to annual increase).

If a completed application is not received by this office, within 14 days, the offer will lapse, and the pitch may be offered to another suitable applicant or readvertised. The decision of the Licensing Team is final.
