Become a childminder
To work as a childminder, you must register with OfSTED (Office for Standards in Education).
Before you can register, you will need to complete all of the following:
- Childminder briefing session
- Introductory course
- 'Universal' Safeguarding children training -
- An approved paediatric first aid training course.
Childminder briefing
We offer regular briefing sessions (£10 to Reading Borough Council residents and £20 to others)
To register as a childminder you must attend a childminder pre-registration briefing. At the briefing you will:
- be given an overview of what being a childminder entails
- learn about the registration process

You should take into consideration the time it will take to complete the mandatory training and preparation work required before you are able to start working as a childminder.
It is not practical for babies or children to attend these sessions

Childminder introductory training
This course prepares learners in setting up and establishing a childminding business. Content includes an introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), aspects of early years care and education as well as the business aspects of a childminding service. It is run by qualified tutors experienced in childminding and early years practice.
Cost: £150 for Reading Borough Council residents, £200 for others.
A bursary is available to residents of Reading Borough Council to cover the cost of this course.
