New JSNA: This is the test site for the new Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment

Since April 2013, every Health & Wellbeing Board in England has had a statutory responsibility to publish a statement of the needs for pharmaceutical services in their area. This is referred to as the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA). Reading Health & Wellbeing Board published their first PNA in April 2015 and this ran until 31st March 2018.

Throughout 2017/18 a revision of the PNA was undertaken.  This reassessed the health needs of the local population in Reading, the current pharmacy network and public feedback on current services. We invited the community, partners and key stakeholders to give us their views on a draft report and the conclusions drawn from it. The final report was taken to Reading's Health and Wellbeing Board in March 2018 and was approved for publication.  This PNA contains information on:

  • The population of Reading, describing age, gender, socio-economic status, health needs and health behaviours which may all impact on the need for pharmaceutical services
  • Pharmacies in Reading and the services they provide, including dispensing medications, providing advice on health and reviewing medicines
  • Relevant maps of Reading showing providers of pharmaceutical services in the area and access to these services
  • Services in neighbouring Health and Wellbeing Board areas that might affect the need for services in Reading.
  • Information about other services that pharmacies in Reading provide such as sexual health and needle exchange
  • Potential gaps in provision and likely future needs.
