Welcome to our online Book of Condolence, a special place of remembrance for the people of Reading.
As Mayor of Reading I join with all of us in Reading who feel sorrow at hearing of the death of Her Majesty the Queen. While we feel great sadness I know we will also remember her with deep gratitude for her lifetime of service. We send our condolences to His Majesty the King and the rest of the Royal family in their very personal grief. The thoughts of everyone in Reading is with them.

I’m not a Royalist. But I recognise that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II worked extremely hard and for much longer than anyone else would be expected to. She is an inspiration to all people, leading by example and showing incredible grace, dedication and tenacity.
Whilst I disagree with the concept of the Monarchy in general, I have nothing but great respect for anyone who can show as much passion in their calling as she did and I have no doubt that His Majesty King Charles III will comfortably fill the large shoes left behind by his mother.

The institution of the monarchy is in many ways an anachronism, but that doesn’t stop millions feeling an almost undefinable loss at the passing of This Queen, The Queen.
In a world full of excess, selfishness, and unaccountability, the Queen was the diametric opposite of those things. Reserved, generous with her time, dignified, unusually humble, and dedicated to promoting British interests at home and abroad.
She may have been a product of privilege, but unlike many children of the very wealthy today, she was also almost unique in her sense of duty and responsibility that few today could even come close to.
We will genuinely never see her like again.
