Few workplaces can offer the diversity of roles and career paths that we do. As a result, we employ people from all walks of life. This diversity of backgrounds and experiences enriches what we do. It equips us with the insight and empathy to understand the things that matter to our customers, and the breadth of thinking to come up with innovative solutions and approaches.
You can expect to be working with people like you, and people who are very different to you. Reading is a diverse and vibrant place, and the council is committed to reflecting that diversity in its workforce, celebrating and encouraging difference.
We are keen to hear from all applicants who fit the criteria. Because we are clear that a combination of difference in our teams produces the best team performance, we are particularly keen to make sure that applicants include people from ethnic minorities, people who live openly as LGBTQI+, or with a disability. We recognise that what people bring through their personal experiences, background and identity significantly enhances the Council’s ability to deliver to our staff and residents.
The Council is a Disability Confident employer. If you have declared a disability in your application we can guarantee you an interview if you meet the essential criteria for the job.
If you are invited for interview, you will be asked if you need any reasonable adjustments in order to attend, and we will make these wherever possible. An example would be ensuring that the interview is held in an accessible room or building.
If you are offered a job, we will make any reasonable adjustments that you might require.
As signatories of The Race at Work Charter we have made a public commitment to improving outcomes of BAME employees in the workplace. The charter consists of five principles to ensure organisations address the barriers to BAME recruitment and progression.
Reading Borough Council has a LGBT+ Network for colleagues to discuss LGBT+ issues within and outside of the council. It is designed to support individuals of the LGBT+ community to feel that they can be who they are at work. The network is open to all staff, including allies. Meetings are held at the end of every month with frequent social events organised through the network.

Our newly formed Cultural Unity, Diversity and Inclusion Network has been set up to promote a positive culture in which everyone is welcome and valued at Reading Borough Council.
