Bathroom

Floor safety
  • Wet floor
Wet tiles and flooring, such as wood or lino, can become extremely slippery when wet.
  • Mats and rugs
Make sure you use nonslip mats inside and outside the bath/shower. Remove loose rugs.
Grab rails and support
  • Grab rails
Make sure any grab rails are properly fixed to the wall. Suction cup grab rails can fail.
Lighting and visibility
  • Good lighting
Poor lighting can hide water, hazards and sharp edges.
  • Night light or motion sensor light
Night lighting can reduce risk of falls when making night time toilet visits.
Shower and bath
  • Hard to get into or out of bath
If you are finding it hard to get into your bath, consider using equipment such as a bath step, seat or board.
  • Hard to get into or out of shower
If you are finding it hard to get into your shower, consider having grab rails fixed inside and outside the shower.
Toilet safety
  • Problems getting on or off toilet
If the height of your toilet is not comfortable, you may find it harder to sit or stand. You should avoid pulling yourself up using the basin, radiator or furniture. Consider getting a grab rail or equipment such as a toilet frame to help.
  • Urgent toilet needs
Many falls happen when hurrying during bathroom trips.
Storage and reachability
  • Toiletries
Store toiletries between hip and shoulder height. This will help you avoid unsafe bending or reaching.
  • Towels
Make sure towels are placed where you can reach them without stepping, bending or reaching.
General safety and environment
  • Clutter
Items on the floor will increase the risk of tripping.
  • Phone or alert device
Try to keep these nearby in case you need help.
