Kitchen

Floor safety
  • Clean and dry floor
Wipe spills immediately – oil, water and other spills can be slippery.
  • Cracked tiles, uneven flooring or loose mats
Repair uneven surfaces and avoid mats unless they have nonslip backing.
Clutter
  • Walkways
Keep walkways clear of all items.
  • Open cupboard doors and drawers
Get into the habit of closing cupboard doors and drawers immediately.
Lighting
  • Good lighting
Poor lighting can hide water, hazards and sharp edges.
Storage and access
  • Everyday items
Keep everyday items in easy reach – between hip and shoulder height. This will help you avoid unsafe bending or reaching.
  • High cupboards
Make sure you use a stable step stool with a handrail if you have to get something from a high cupboard.
  • Heavy items
Store heavy items, like pans or mixers, at a low level to make it easy to get to them.
Appliances and cables
  • Cords
Keep cables away from walkways or hanging from counters.
  • Carrying items
Consider equipment such as a kitchen trolley to help you carry items from the kitchen if you are unsteady.
