Living room

Floors and carpets
  • Loose rugs or mats
Remove them or secure with nonslip backing.
  • Carpets worn, bunched or lifting at the edges
    Repair or tape edges flat.
  • Clean and dry floors
    Wipe spills immediately.
  • Cables across the floor
Move them to the wall and secure with clips.
Clutter
  • Walkways
Keep the path to your chair clear of clutter.
  • Furniture placing
Make sure furniture is arranged so that you can move freely around without squeezing through gaps.
Lighting
  • Good lighting
Make sure lighting is good at all times, including evenings.
  • Light switches
Light switches should be easy to reach when entering the room. If they aren’t, consider a remote switch or motion sensor light.
Furniture safety
  • Chairs at right height
Your knees should be level with, or slightly below, your hips when seated.
  • Chair with arms
Using a chair with arms can help you sit and stand more easily.
  • Sturdy furniture
Make sure your furniture is sturdy and not wobbly.
  • Low furniture
Don’t have coffee tables or footstools placed where you might trip over them.
