Black outs
Black outs are also referred to as fainting, loss of consciousness, or you may have been told you have syncope.
Black outs can cause falls, especially in the elderly. They can lead to injuries such as broken bones and hospitalisation.
Causes of black outs
- Heart problems
- Low blood pressure
- Dehydration
- Side effects of some medication
Preventing blackouts and staying safe
- Stay well hydrated – drink plenty of water to help keep your blood pressure stable
- Sit or stand slowly – change position slowly so your blood pressure can adjust
- Follow your doctor’s advice if you have a health condition that causes blackouts
- Manage stress and anxiety – try relaxation exercises and stay calm to avoid emotional triggers
When should you see a doctor?
Always speak to your GP if you’ve experienced a black out, loss of consciousness or have found yourself on the floor and don’t know why or how. Many of these conditions can be treated successfully.
