Dizziness

Dizziness can affect people in different ways, such as light-headedness, spinning sensations and feeling unsteady. Dizziness can result in a fall.

Some causes of dizziness

  • Heart problems
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Ear disorders such as vertigo
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Preventing dizziness and staying safe

There are some practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of suffering from dizziness, including:

  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water to help keep your blood pressure stable
  • Sit or stand up slowly – change position slowly so your blood pressure can adjust
  • Ensure temperature isn’t too high – avoid extreme changes in temperature
  • Follow your doctor’s advice if you have a health condition that causes dizziness

When should you see a doctor?

Always speak to a doctor if you have experienced dizziness, or have found yourself on the floor and don’t know why or how. Many of these conditions can be treated successfully.
