Boiler Upgrade Scheme

As part of the UK’s commitment to become Net Zero by 2050, the government has introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Homeowners in England and Wales can get up to £5,000 off the cost of a new air source heat pump or biomass boiler and up to £6,000 off the cost of a new ground source heat pump as part of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The grant goes towards the capital cost of the heat pump or biomass boiler as well as the installation costs.

What does it cover?

The grant covers:

  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
  • £6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump

You can only get one grant per property.

Eligibility requirements

You may be eligible if you:

  • Own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
  • Have installed (or plan to install) your new heating system on or after 1 April 2022
  • Are replacing fossil fuel heating systems (such as oil, gas or electric)

Excluded properties

Grants are not available for:

  • Social housing
  • New build properties
  • Properties that have already had government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler

How to Apply

  • Contact suitable MCS certified installers to get quotes for the work.
  • Confirm you’re eligible (your installer will tell you).
  • Agree a quote with your chosen installer.

The installer will then apply on your behalf on the Ofgem website.

The value of the grant will be taken off the amount you pay to your chosen installer.
