Beware of cold callers about repairs!
There has been an increase in cold callers and third-party companies contacting tenants about housing disrepair claims. These callers may say they work with your landlord or the council – this is not true.
Please be aware:
- These callers are not connected to Reading Borough Council
- They may claim to be from a charity, the ‘Repairs Team’, ‘Housing Maintenance Department’, or say they are ‘working on behalf of the council. These claims are not true.
- They often use cold calls, leaflets, social media and local-looking phone numbers to appear genuine.
- They may knock on doors without warning.
- They usually collect your personal details and pass them to ‘no win, no fee’ solicitors, which could lead to unexpected costs or legal issues.
- In some cases court applications have been made without the tenant’s consent resulting in tenants being ordered to pay significant legal costs.

- Do not share personal information with unknown callers.
