Reading Loves Reading 2026

Saturday 23 May – Saturday 12 September 2026

Get reading for free this summer!

Last year 1,863 children and 540 adults took part in Reading Loves Reading at Reading Libraries. This year we have an exciting space theme! Children can challenge parents, carers and even their teachers to read alongside them. Each mission is free to join, and we no longer charge overdue fines. To complete a mission, you need to read 6 books over 3 visits (Book Bingo, 3 books, over 3 visits). At each branch, all finishers of each challenge will be entered into a branch prize draw for the chance to win one of our main prizes.

Children’s Crafts May Half Term and Summer Holidays

Every library will also be running lots of free and low-cost activities throughout May half term and the summer school holidays. Join us for our Launch Day on Saturday 23 May at all libraries. We will be making giant rockets and launching a spaceship colouring in competition to win a family ticket to Reading Rep’s Christmas show!

Young volunteers needed

Reading Library Service is looking for young people aged 14 to 18 who can encourage children to take part in and complete the Reading Loves Reading Challenge, from Saturday 23 May to Saturday 12 September 2026.

Tasks will include talking with and listening to younger children about the books they have been reading and suggesting other things they may like to read. The aim would also be to help the children and their parents or carers to understand how the Reading Loves Reading challenge works handing out rewards and supporting with events and craft activities.

The library will provide training, supervision and support and it is a great opportunity to develop new skills and experience for the future as well as gain work experience for CVs.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 22nd July 2026.
