Conservation of the Forbury Bandstand

The Forbury Bandstand is currently undergoing some conservation work to ensure it can be enjoyed by visitors to the gardens for generations to come.

The much-loved Victorian bandstand has been temporarily closed whilst specialist conservation experts work to improve the stability of its structure.

Update 2 May 2023:

Work on Forbury bandstand is progressing and on track to be completed in early to mid-June. The scaffolding has now been taken down.

Work so far includes:

  • New balustrades that are on site and currently being undercoated. The balustrades are due to be installed in the next two weeks.
  • The painting of the bandstand is nearly completed in the original design and with the original colours of white and green.
  • Repairs on the columns are almost complete.
  • Roof repairs are completed.
  • The weathervane will be repainted shortly.

Once all the work is completed the stone flooring and steps will be thoroughly cleaned.

Thank you for your patience whilst this important work has been happening.

You can keep up to date on our progress on this page or by following the council’s social media @ReadingCouncil.
We look forward to everyone being able to enjoy the restored bandstand in June.
