2. Look out for your personalised bin calendar

Printed calendars are being sent to all households from Monday 19 May 2025. Keep an eye out in the post, and put it somewhere safe to remind you which bin to put out each week.

3. Download the Scrapp app for free

You can download the Scrapp app for free from your phone’s app store. The app lets you set up weekly phone reminders the night before your bin collection day.

To get started:

  • select England as your location
  • choose Reading Borough Council
  • go to the Bin Reminders section on the homepage
  • tap 'Subscribe' to get reminders

Scrapp notifications are completely free and can be helpful while you adjust to your new collection days.

Why are bin collection days changing?

We’re updating routes to make collections:

  • more reliable: by collecting one type of waste each day, it helps our crews to complete rounds reliably and respond faster to any issues
  • more efficient: we’re preparing to add new services like glass collection
  • future-proof: so we can keep up with Reading’s growing population

Collection frequency will stay the same:

  • food waste: weekly
  • recycling and general waste: alternate weeks

Expected temporary delays

Some streets will have a temporary 3-week gap in either recycling or general waste collections when the new schedule starts.

If your collection is delayed, you can put out any extra recycling or waste on your next collection day for that bin.

How to ensure extra waste gets collected

Please place any additional waste neatly next to your bin on the new scheduled day of collection.

To ensure collection:

  • General waste must be bagged and securely tied
  • Loose recycling (cans, plastic etc.) must be placed in translucent waste bag and securely tied
  • Larger recycling such as cardboard boxes and packaging can be folded and stacked
  • Frequently asked questions

What if I have too much waste because of the changes?

Please place any additional waste neatly next to your bin on the new scheduled day of collection.

    To ensure collection:

  • I have not received a new bin collection calendar - how can I get one?
You can download a full bin calendar online and print it at home.
My garden (green) waste collections are missing

Garden waste collections will only appear in calendars up until the end of your 12-month subscription period.

With an active subscription, collections happen every two weeks. If a collection date is missing due to the new schedule, please leave out any extra garden waste on your next scheduled collection and crews will collect it.

I put my bin out on the new day but it hasn’t been collected

If your bin isn't emptied, please leave it out. It will be collected during extended hours or the next working day. Use the waste service tracker to check your bin collection status at any time.

If your road is not listed on the waste service tracker, and your bin has not been collected the next working day, you can report a missed bin online.

Will there be any changes to bin collections on bank holidays?

As usual, bin collections will move forward by one day after a bank holiday Monday. This means:

  • Monday collections are moved to the Tuesday
  • Tuesday collections are moved to the Wednesday
  • and so on until Saturday
  • Collections will return to normal the following week.

Our online bin calendar is always kept up to date with bank holiday information, so check there if you are unsure. We will also share bank holiday changes on our website, by email and on our social media channels.
