Remembrance and armistice events in Reading
The town of Reading will hold two special ceremonies to remember soldiers who gave their lives for their country.
Remembrance Sunday's ceremony
The service starts at 9.25am on Sunday 9 November at Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin. Everyone is welcome.
There will be readings by:
- Mr Andrew Try, the Lord Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire
- Alice Mpofu-Coles, the Mayor of Reading
- Right Reverend Mary Gregory, the Bishop of Reading,
After the church service, at around 10:25am, there will be a parade through town. The Waterloo Band and Bugles of the 7 Rifles will lead the march to Forbury Gardens. Anyone can join in the parade.
At the war memorial in Forbury Gardens, people will lay poppy wreaths to honour the fallen soldiers. There will be a 2 minute silence at 11am.
A Ukrainian choir will perform.
Armistice Day ceremony
On Tuesday 11 November there will be a short ceremony at Forbury Garden's war memorial.
The Mayor will lead a 2 minute silence at 11am. Everyone is welcome to attend and pay their respects.
Both ceremonies give people in Reading a chance to say thank you to the brave men and women who fought to keep the country safe.
Mayor of Reading, Cllr Alice Mpofu-Coles, said:
“The sacrifices made by both men and women to defend and uphold the values of this country never will be forgotten. The two events at Forbury Gardens are always poignant and I would encourage as many people as possible to join me on Sunday 9, and Tuesday 11 November, to honour those who have served, and those still serving, to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Cllr Liz Terry, Leader of Reading Borough Council, said:
“Reading’s two Remembrance events are always an important time of commemoration and reflection in the town, as we come together to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day and salute the bravery and courage of personnel both past and present.”
