Safer cycling for children

Cycling with children can be a rewarding and enjoyable family activity. It offers physical and mental health benefits for everyone involved.

How to make sure everyone is safe and have fun

  • Set a good example – obey all traffic rules and encourage them to make their own decisions when cycling.
  • Cycle training – you can teach children elements of cycling yourself. There are also cycle training courses available from Bikeability.
  • Wear the right clothing – make sure everyone in the group wears bright or reflective clothing. Use reflectors and lights when riding at twilight or in the dark.
  • Wear a helmet – make sure everyone in the group is wearing a helmet that fits.
  • Bike safety – make sure the bike is the correct size for the child and inspect the bikes to ensure they are roadworthy before each ride.
  • Plan your journey – choose quieter roads and cycle paths. Avoid busy roads or complicated junctions.
  • Make it fun – don’t go too far, especially the first few rides. Plan refreshment breaks or stops at playgrounds.

The rules of the road

  • On roads, adults should ride behind children, slightly further out to provide a buffer to passing traffic
  • It is ok to ride side by side on quiet roads, for increased visaibility
  • Encourage children to follow the Highway Code
  • Teach them to assess risks and make safe decisions
