Dropped kerbs, APMs and disabled boxes

Dropped kerbs

You must have Reading Borough Council’s permission to install a vehicle crossing (drop kerb) to your property. We charge a non-refundable application fee of £150. The application fee includes:

  • processing the application
  • making a site visit and taking measurements
  • issuing a formal quotation

Please refer to the following documents before making an application payment:

Further details on requirements are included in the vehicle crossing/dropped kerb application form.

Please note: an application not following the vehicle crossing policy will not be accepted.

Access Protection Markings

Access protection markings (APMs) are white H-shaped lines painted onto the road to draw attention to a driveway or access. These white lines are advisory markings only and are not enforceable in law.

If you have a dropped kerb (footway crossing) you can apply to have an APM painted. If there are yellow lines in front of your dropped kerb we won’t be able to paint an APM.

To apply for a new APM or for a repaint of an existing marking, you will need to pay a non-refundable application fee of £75. We will carry out a site visit within ten working days to check its suitability. If your application is successful, we will give you a quote to complete the work. The price quoted depends on the size of the marking and does not include any future repainting costs.

Disabled parking boxes

You can apply for a disabled parking box marking if you meet all the following criteria:

  • currently hold a blue badge
  • live at the address the disabled box is for
  • are the car owner or the car owner is registered at the address
  • have no access to private off-street parking near your home, for example driveway or garage
  • experience difficulty parking on the street near your property
  • have no parking restrictions (except residents-only parking) outside your home
  • have a disability that means you cannot walk further than short distances

To apply for a new disabled parking box or to have one repainted, you will need to pay a non-refundable application fee of £75. We will carry out a site visit within ten working days to check its suitability for a disabled parking box.

If your application is successful, we will provide you with a quote to complete the work. The price is based on the size of the box and does not include any future repainting costs.

Once painted, the space can be used by any Blue Badge holder. The marked-out area is advisory only, so not legally enforceable.
