There are a number of routes to enter the profession whether you’re still at school, about to graduate, or looking for a change of direction. The Department for Education has a vast amount of information about how to get into teaching.
The undergraduate route combines your chosen Bachelor of Education (BEd), Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Science (BSc) degree with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Most courses prepare you for primary teaching, but there are also some undergraduate secondary programmes. For more information contact your local university or visit UCAS.
If you have a degree in any subject, you can obtain QTS by completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at university or college. The Department of Education have more information on PGCEs.
Reading Borough Council is involved in School Direct, a teacher training route to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) whilst based within a school. Two schools lead on the School Direct Programme – Geoffrey Field Junior School and Christ the King Primary School.
