Work begins on new studio theatre at The Hexagon
Work has started on Reading’s newest performance venue.
The new Studio Theatre will be built next to The Hexagon. It will be a flexible, modern space for shows, community performances and music events.
First stage under way
Contractors from Feltham Construction Ltd have now moved onto the site. Their first job will be to take down the backstage, dock and stage door areas.
The new building will be on Queen’s Walk, with space for 200 seated guests or up to 300 standing. There will also be extra seating on a gallery level.
A new bar, foyer and outside space will help create a welcoming area for visitors. The foyer will be used for rehearsals and community events when there are no shows.
The theatre will have better facilities for performers and staff, and improved access for visitors. A lift and stairs will connect the new spaces. There will also be a new accessible entrance from Queen’s Walk.
A moment to mark the start
Council leaders joined construction and design partners to mark the beginning of the project.
Councillor Liz Terry, Leader of Reading Borough Council
"I am so pleased we are now at the point where this transformative work is beginning to create a new purpose-built venue.
This new theatre, along with the Reading Central Library and redesigned customer reception, will provide amazing new facilities for our residents and our town.
The new Studio Theatre is also set to be at the heart of a regeneration for that area of the town as part of the Minster Quarter.”
Councillor Adele Barnett-Ward, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Culture
“A new theatre will attract an even wider range of acts and shows for the people of Reading and the surrounding Thames Valley to enjoy.
The arts are such a vital part of the town and people’s lives whether they perform or love to watch live shows – there will be the chance to enjoy more.
I cannot wait to see the first shows in the new Studio Theatre and see community groups use the space, and today is the first stage towards that goal.”
Shows paused, but not for long
The Hexagon will pause its events programme for 11 weeks while work begins.
Shows return on Saturday 27 September 2025 with The Dinosaur that Pooped: A Rock Show. Taylormania, a tribute to Taylor Swift, will follow on Sunday 28 September 2025.
A temporary backstage area has been built at Lavender Gardens so that performances can continue safely during the rest of the construction period.
The Hexagon’s popular pantomime will return this winter, starring CBeebies’ Justin Fletcher in Beauty and the Beast.
Opening in 2027
The new Studio Theatre is expected to open in spring 2027. In the meantime, you can see what's on at the Hexagon online.
