Cross Thames travel

The issue

Journeys that involve crossing the River Thames are slowed down due to high demand  and levels of traffic with inadequate infrastructure. Traffic can only use Reading or Caversham Bridges in Reading, or Sonning and Henley Bridges outside of the borough.

The levels of traffic cause congestion and air pollution.

The scheme

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:

  • Review need for an additional road crossing and associated roads
  • Enhance sustainable travel options

The outcome

  • Alternative route for traffic away from existing river bridges
  • Reduced congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Increase in cycling levels
  • Improved bus journey reliability
  • Shift to more use of public transport
