Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) managing travel on the roads

The issue   

Reading suffers from high levels of congestion. Currently, we do not have the ability to manage the whole network in real-time. If we did, we would be able to minimise delays and respond to changing demand and/or incidents on the road network. 

The scheme   

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:  

• Direct traffic to appropriate roads, to minimise congestion 
• Use media and traffic control measure to redirect traffic in emergency situations 
• Give network information to support Mobility as a Service (MaaS) 
• Develop smart alternatives to M4 closure diversions 
• Use smart solutions to keep public transport flowing and avoiding congestion

The outcome   

• Improved traffic management 
• Improved air quality 
• Reduced congestion 
• Reduced emergency service response times 
• Improved transport data to inform future transport schemes and policies
