Gambling premises licence

If you want to run a betting shop, betting track, bingo premises, casino adult gaming centre or a licensed family entertainment centre in Reading you must complete an application form, provide a plan of the premises and pay the appropriate fee.

You will have to serve a notice of application to the following responsible authorities:

  • Licensing, Planning, Environmental Protection and Safe Guarding Children’s Board in Reading Borough Council
  • the Gambling Commission
  • Thames Valley Police’s Licensing Officer
  • Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • HM Revenue and Customs

Individual applicants will need to serve this notice.

Applications by more than one individual will need to serve this notice.

This notice must be served on each responsible authority within 7 days, starting on the day the application is made to the licensing authority.

You will have to complete and publish a public notice. This notice must be displayed on the premises to which the application relates in a place at which it can conveniently be read by members of the public from the exterior of the premises for a period of no less than 28 consecutive days starting on the day on which the application is made to the licensing authority. The same notice must also be printed in a local newspaper circulating within the licensing authority’s area on at least one occasion during the period of ten working days starting with the day after the day on which the application is made to the authority.

The consultation period for applications runs for 28 consecutive days starting on the day the application is made to the licensing authority.

Before applying you should read our Statement of Gambling Licensing Policy . We require you to produce a local area risk assessment and details on how the applicant will promote the licensing objectives.

To submit your application, please e-mail the application form and any required supporting documentation to licensing@reading.gov.uk. When we have received your e-mail, we will contact you in order to take payment of the relevant fee.
